I reached North Cachar in March, 1940, and after a reconnaissance of the district I established a permanent camp at the village of Laisong, which was the most convenient centre. This camp lay inside the village perimeter and was included in all village ceremonies. I at first intended to stay not more than a year in the Central Nzemi area, but in fact remained for six and a half years. (v)
