Below 2,500 feet the climate is hot and unhealthy. Above 4,500 feet it is unpleasantly cold in winter and cloud hangs almost continuously during the monsoon. In addition, strong springs are difficult to find above this level and water generally is scarce. All Central Nzemi villages lie between these limits of altitude, Hange (2,500 feet), Asalu (2,699 feet) and Impoi (3,100 feet) at the lower extreme, Hangrum (4,200 feet) and Nenglo (4,500 feet) at the upper. Sites offering natural defences such as cliffs and easily-defended necks of land are favoured. (11) |
