But now another factor affecting village size becomes apparent. There is a lower limit below which a Central Nzemi village ceases to be an efficient and economic unit. In villages below the limit tasks such as the construction of morungs (bachelor's halls), the raising of funeral monuments and the building and maintenance of village pipelines and water-troughs occupy a disproportionately large share of the time of the male labour-force, reducing the time available for agricultural and other work.
