A very bleak looking morn. Grey & heavy clouds above sun rose between a level broad belt of cloud on the distant mountains and was soon lost in the first. Sent Bhimnarain up to look after the Nagas & did not follow until 11 o/c, the whole hill buried in mist. Finished by the fire a sketch of the thrush shot on previous day & then skinned it. Found a few Nagas at work, the bulk huddled round their fire & I cd scarcely blame them. Mist & driving sleet wind from west. Could neither see nor do anything. Got the remaining trees cut down, paid up the coolies & sent them off with Kahele the Naga interpreter, wrote & sent a chit to Butler by same hand, had bkfast under a rock on the sheltered side & then followed myself. Abt 2 o/c it came on to rain, lasting until abt 4 o/c. This I trust will clear the air & give us a fine day. Chandrabir had arrived in mean time from below with rice, bringing in sp. of Sibragracilis. Later I got a batch of birds from Butler but no letter which is odd. Sat by the fire & ate dinner. Wind blowing gusty abt 7.30 from North but a shelter I have had rigged up with boughs on that side makes it much snugger as I write this. |
