Sleet & rain during the night but morning gave signs of a clear up & I started early for the mark after having bkfast in camp. It was clearing fast when I arrived at the summit. Noticed near summit Birch only two very large trees the rest mostly small one and a half feet girth is growing tall. A maple with fine serrated leaves. 3 sp of Rhodedendron. New. Saw one large tree about 4 diam. Box & some other lower down that I didn't know. One Rhododendron grew to quite 7-8 feet in girth with long thick leaves. Sleet of the previous night whitened the ground & it was very cold. Set the men at the direct ray to Paona after trying with theod at the West End what the angle of depression really is. By five o'clock the ray began to open out & to my great delight I cd make out the mark on Paona, so the angle can be measured & I shall sleep much sounder. The view in the afternoon & evening was superb, superb, no other word cd be applied. The country to the east shewed quite brown & bare in its features quite like parts of the Himalayah. The fine peak we had first seen from Kadinba was seen the last thing. Now a fine snow capped peak & must be quite 12000ft. I cut in its position on Plane table with the Kadinba ray & left the hill. It was too late to take any angles. find marks all ready by Mr Ogle so he is getting on all well. Tolezo also up. Dak came in, no letter from Emery only a paper. |
