text: Dak was sent off about 9 o/c. Tangal came and informed us verbally at tent that we might continue the Survey. He looked at the Plane Table & was shewn the position of Shipvomi. He seemed to be studying the map most attentively & said he had gone a long way to the northward. I asked him how many days march, he said "three" but that the big river wound about very much on the line he went. Then still with his finger on the site of Shipvomi he said "ah this stream (on the South) flows to Munipur & this to the big river". Now he meant Yemai & where no doubt he spent 10 days for there we heard the M's had been & had killed a lot of them. He also said there is a small village off on this side, which is not on map. This would naturally be Shipvomi & he thus clearly proved he (53) had never visited that last named village. Their ignorance of the geography of places so near them is very great as instanced on this occasion the moonshi "Gokul" asked if the "Lanier" was the river we called the Irrawaddy. After shewing them the Theod & their looking at our Rifles they departed. While at Bkfast Kehele came in, in a great state of excitement, he could not have been higher had the Raja & his army been marching on the place but it was only to announced the arrival of the head of a "Sirow" evidently a different species from the Himalayan form. I made a drawing of it during the morning & worked at the new birds that had been found. After packed new shells away the day was gone & we made a short stroal [sic] into the Bazar & I bought a cloth for 1/8/-. Rain came on about 10 o/c & it poured all night, but our tent is sound & we slept ditto & did not turn out until 8 am.
