I have the honour to write concerning the work that it is desirable should be taken up by No.6 [pai] during the remainder of the recess & the fieldwork yet remaining to be done. Of the maps, I do not see any necessity of redrawing any of the Naga Hills or Munipur Sheets, but there are two, No XV & XIV in the Khasi Hills which should be certainly redrawn and while it is in progress an appraiser should be sent to examine the ground north of the Dirugher ridge where there is an error in the junction line which has already been explained. This work might be done by N.J. [Nussuman] & Mr Robert with reference to the Survey of the Boundaries. I would protest against their being taken up on any scale larger than 2 miles equal one inch & then only where the boundary has to be marked by pillars In places where it will now & then pass over a watershed line. In the case of the Garo Khasi boundary it is marked for so [82] many miles by large streams, it can be laid down on our present maps & the same applies to the Nowgong, Naga Hills & Cachar boundaries. It would be a wasteful expenditure of money to take them up on a larger scale particularly when the country is of so little value. |

The survey of the Station of Shillong is a work that can be gradually taken up but is not of very great importance. The new lands taken up by Government could be traversed & added to the first map of the Station made by Lt Riddell on the 6 in=1mile scale & would be ample for the requirements of the Civil authorities & the area which they require could be ascertained in a few days work but it is too far from the Station to be included in the 24 inch map [unfinished]. |
