Nagas abandon ambush because of bad omens; punitive burning of Rechim |

Up early. Marched for Yekam. Went cautiously searching in the long grass jungle on either side as we went. About a mile and a half from the Doiang saw evidence of an intended ambuscade which had been abandoned as the fates were unpropitious little space had been cleared to allow of men crouching in the long grass & in each was a supply of stones: in one or two the oracles had been consulted by cutting small chips from sticks and noticing the way in which they fell. Arrived at Yekam about 11 a.m. without any alarms. Breakfast. Left coolies at Yekam, and skirmished up to Rechim, whence the villagers were fleeing in every direction with their goods. Occupied and burned the village. Searched jungle near. Encamped near small village below the peak. Shot a calf; after shot a cow. |
