Road good till we reached Chua which is built on a steep ridge of rock, the almost glassy slopes of which were dangerous to walk over and the road thence to the stream is steep and stony. Camp at 6.30 4010/3900 M = 3955. Afang at 9 a.m. 5890/5650 M = 5770 200 houses about. Aching at 10.30 5210/4970 M = 5740 200 houses? Lungching at 2 p.m. 5210/5000 M = 5105. Colonel awoke me at 2.30 to say that Naga had been heard near the sentries. Probably the fellows, a dozen or so, who had passed through camp just before dark and had been making preparations to sleep near us. I turned in again thinking it unlikely that any thing would happen and slept till 5 when I got up. We got off about 6.30 and marched through Afang and on to Achung and thence to ravine where we breakfasted and plane tabled on to Lungching and Chua and descended to camp. Reached it at 5.30. Coolies coming (66) in afterwards. The camp is a small patch of cultivation in the bed of the stream - a pleasant enough spot. |

The Nagas today have been pretty friendly though as usual hospitably pressing us not to stay in their villages. We got about 6 maunds of rice out of the three first villages without even the trouble of asking for it. |

Chua is built in a most curious spot on a narrow ridge which hardly admits of a foot path outside the single row of houses built on the edge. The other houses are built on the steep slopes which are so steep that is is with difficulty that one can walk down them. The rock looks burnt, probably igneous trap - strata steep and thin. |
