In 1840 Lieutenant Bigge "was authorised to enter the hills and make a leisurely, and, if possible, friendly, progress from village to village, conciliating the Chiefs by personal intercourse, and bringing to bear on the people that nameless attraction the English always think they exercise over less civilised races. In 1841 Lieutenant Bigge carried out his tour. He met with no opposition, and concluded friendly agreements with most of the leading communities." (Memorandum on the North-East Frontier of Bengal, by Alexander Mackenzie.) The Angami Chiefs came down to Nowgong, agreed to pay tribute, and to abstain from internecine feuds. |
