Capt. Butler's visits to Naga Hills in 1846 and 1847 |

In 1841, however, when an attempt to collect the tribute was made, it was refused; and the refusal emphasised by several daring incursions, in one of which a Shan outpost was overpowered, and most of the sepoys killed. A somewhat savage retribution followed, and our relations with the Nagas were in a worse state than ever. In 1846 and 1847 Captain Butler visited the hills, and attempted to bring about a better state of things. As we have so often seen in our dealings with savage, or semi-savage, tribes, the headmen " came in " freely, and made a profusion of promises, which neither they nor their people (14) had any intention of keeping. |
