In the meantime, the Brigadier General had ordered a wing ( three hundred and fifty men) of the 42nd Assam Light Infantry, from Shillong, to be put in motion for the Naga Hills, and at the same time he desired that the wing of the 10th Native Infantry, stationed at Dacca, might be sent to Shillong, to replace that of the 42nd Assam Light Infantry. He considered this measure a "necessary precaution in case of prolonged resistance and on account of the heavy losses of the 44th Native Infantry." No objection was made by the Lieutenant Governor of Bengal to the transfer of the wing 10th Native Infantry, from Dacca to Shillong; but the Chief Commissioner of Assam opposed the move on the score of expense, and stated that the four hundred and odd men left at Shillong were, in his opinion, ample for all political purposes. Accordingly, the wing 10th Native Infantry was ordered to stand fast for the present, but to hold itself in readiness for immediate movement. |
