Although it was not possible, under present circumstances, to detach troops about the country to attack the numerous and widely scattered hostile Angami communities, there was no reason to delay the punishment of the neighbouring and deeply implicated village of Jotsoma. On the 26th November, therefore, the day after the return of the troops to Sachima, all available men of the 43rd Assam Light Infantry, and the guns, the whole under Colonel Robertson ( who was accompanied by Lieutenant Colonel Johnstone, Chief Political Officer), marched to Kohima, preparatory to attacking Jotsoma. Next day (41) Colonel Robertson advanced, and partially ( One khel of Jotsoma appears to have held aloof from the hostile combination ) destroyed the village, which contained about a thousand houses. No opposition whatever was attempted by the enemy. A party of the 44th Native Infantry, however, sent out from Sachima to cooperate, had a skirmish with the Nagas in the valley between that place and Jotsoma, and killed several without suffering any loss. The guns subsequently returned to Sachima. |
