The road on the left bank of the Dansiri from Golaghat to the Nichi Guard is sixty-two or sixty-three miles in length and mostly follows the windings of the river. During the recent operations it was kept in fair order, but in the rains it is, as a rule, almost impassable for any animals but elephants, and often impassable for them, owing to the bad state of the elephant bridges over the numerous " jans" or small streams which flow into the Dansiri from the range of hills on the left bank. During the rains, jungle grows so rapidly on the road that it can only be kept clear at great cost: very often the road is flooded,and sometimes as much as six feet of water has been known to lie on it. Wild elephants also help to destroy the bridges and bunds as soon as they are made during the cold season. When the road is in good repair, it is practicable for carts from Golaghat to Borpathar, twenty miles, and also from Dimapur to Nichi Guard, nine miles. |
