15th January, Saturday. I moved camp to-day to Longlasunu about 8 miles the greater portion of the road lay through the valley of the Longlokso one of the large feeders of the Kolleanee. About half way down the valley some Cacharees have made a small settlement consisting of 5 houses. |

The Gaonboorahs of all the villages composing the western Rengmahs being now assembled in camp I explained to them that I had appointed Phempuga Mouzadar over them and that I expected them to pay in their revenue into his hands in order that he might in turn pay it in to the Treasury at Samoogooting. I had of course to listen to a vast amount of palaver first they pleaded they were so poor they were utterly unable to pay any revenue at all, then they wanted me to agree to raise a tax of only one rupee per house instead of two but after the conference had lasted through the better part of the afternoon and they had exhausted all they had to say and found I was still firm they finally accepted my terms and promised that the revenue should be paid in as soon as possible and that they would set about collecting at once. |
