Diary of the Deputy Commissioner of the Naga Hills |

26th November 1870, Saturday. Made over temporary charge of the Deputy Commissioner's office to Mr. James, Assistant Commissioner and marched to Dimapur. On route I inspected the coolies at work on the road which I am glad to say is rapidly being put into good order. |

27th November, Sunday. Proceeded to Hurreeojan. Portions of the road are very bad indeed still owing to the water not having yet subsided and I had to struggle through stagnant pools almost knee deep in mud and slush. However, I hope we shall soon get this put to rights though I regret it is impossible to obtain the aid of an other assistant during the cold month as I am afraid it is quite out of the question to get the full worth of our money unless the coolie is subject to a constant and unremitting supervision. |

29th November, Tuesday. Marched into Borpathar. This road is very much the same conditions as that was came over yesterday. |
