text: 20th January, Friday. Marched into Popoolongmai or Kenomah. Here I met Mr. Roberts Assistant Surveyor from whom I was most disagreeably surprised to learn that a rumour had reached him that the Nagas had speared two of my men at Samaguting and a Constable arriving in the evening who confirmed the report. I have decided upon leaving my guard and baggage behind to follow by the regular stages whilst I push on to Samaguting in one day if possible.
