18th February, Sunday. Having made over temporary charge of the Deputy Commissioner's office to Mr. James, Assistant Commandant, yesterday I marched into Setekemah this afternoon. During the last fortnight, I have been occupied in cutting two bridle paths the one leading through the old site of Razephemah towards Chamah, and the other into Sitekemah so our march to-day along the latter was a very pleasant one for we rode our ponies up the whole way. I think the distance from the station to the Diphupani Guard House must be a good 3 miles and from thence on into Sitekemah about 5 miles more, so I cannot be far off if I calculate the whole distance to be along 8 miles. I propose halting here for a day or two in order to continue the path on towards Sepamah if I can only succeed in getting coolies. |

The Sitekemah men have already done 9 days work for me and I cannot ask them to do any more so I must trust to Seppemah to help me. I sent off a constable yesterday to invite them in but he has not turned up yet. However as I have managed to secure the services of 22 permanent Naga coolies (men of Kohimah, Mozemah, Jotsomah and other villages) who have promised to stick to me throughout my tour, I shall be able to do something with them even if I can get no one else. |
