13th March, Wednesday. Sending off our escort and coolies direct to Jotsomah this morning, my brother and I accompanied by a "Dabasha" and 2 orderlies branched of in a north-westerly direction to visit Meremah, a village containing 118 houses (divided into the Horutzoma, Cheatchuma, Keditzuma and Vesiomma clans). The distance between Kohimah and Meremah is a short 4 miles over a capital road running along a fine broad, undulating spur. I may here remark that the Headquarters of the Naga Hills ought in my humble opinion to be fixed either on this Ridge at Mozemah or else right away north on one of the slopes of Thebzother, a high but broad mountain overlooking the plains of Golaghat, as any of these spots would do, the latter perhaps the best. However as there appears to be no intention on the part of Government to remove the station from its present site, it is needless to discuss the merits of these or any other positions. From Meremah a stiffish descent for about 2 miles brought us down to one of the feeders of the Zubja which we crossed (over the usual kind of suspension bridge) and after toiling up a precious stiff ascent for about 3 miles, got into camp at Jotsamah and were delighted to find breakfast ready for us. |
