In the morning I walked over the village or rather villages for the rival clans are about 500 yards apart and being divided by walls, ditches and barricades, Jotsomah has all the appearance of being separate villages. |

I was glad to find that although, as has been expected, there was still considerable ill-feeling between the rival clans, yet no actual breach has occurred since peace was declared some 18 months ago, and I sincerely hope the sage advice I have been giving to both clans today may prove to have been not altogether thrown away. |

[18] Jerile and Lelpur returned from Chudemah this evening and I am sorry to say they tell me they have failed to find Zavakhre and can gain no tidings of him as the Chudemah men refuse to say where he is - apparently from fear that my message was only a plant - however I have ordered the headmen of all the clans to come to me tomorrow morning as I have something important to tell them and I think if I then make public my offer of pardon, openly before all, it is sure to reach the ears of Zuvakhre and Pengule and they will then probably come in. At present I think they very likely imagine I have made no promise at all and that the message was merely a dodge of Jerile's to get hold of them. |
