27 March, Wednesday. Having once more made over temporary charge of my office to Mr. James, I marched to-day to Lemhamah, distance about 20 miles. The first portion of our journey was along the bridle path I have just had constructed through the old site of Razephemah and here we got over the ground in capital time, but beyond that and specially the bit between the Chamah and Lemhamah spur which led down the rough stony bed of one stream and up the bed of another was excessively bad and delayed us considerably, the consequence was we did not reach camps until it was pitch dark, and I had to send back men with torches to show the coolies the way up. We have had a succession of heavy showers throughout the day, and I am afraid we are in for some nasty weather, in which case I shall be compelled to shorten my tour very considerably, for it is so late in the season now I don't think I am acting quite prudently in venturing out of all, however I am anxious to have another good look at the Burrail watershed previous to replying to the Government letter regarding the Munipur boundary lately received and after that unless we have a change and some fine weather again, I shall try and make a short cut home via Tesephemah. |
