5th December, 1872. Halted at Mozemah. Inspector Memaram returned from Khonomah yesterday evening and reported that he had visited both the rival clans (i.e. Sememah and Merhemah) and had tried very hard to induce them to come in and lay their quarrel before me but had failed - each clan declaring that they were quite ready to obey my orders in everything but that no Tengimah can voluntarily abandon a blood feud until one party or the other has been completely subdued. The Samemahs clan having drawn blood last (by shooting one of the Merhamah men only a few days ago), would, from what I hear, be rather glad to make peace just now whereas of course the Merhamah clan won't hear of making peace until they have succeeded in murdering another Samemah and so it will go on ad infinitum and in the meantime I suppose I must content myself with giving sage council to which neither party will pay the slightest attention. |

[23] My whole time to-day has been taken up in giving audience to deputations from each of the three clans into which Mozemah is divided and I am very glad to say we are all on the most amicable terms again; I think my having come up at once in person to insist upon my orders being carried out, has had a very good effect upon these savages, for all the Penmahs have assured me to-day that they will do their utmost to prevent their men from every again committing outrages similar to the one for which I have just fined them, and moreover they have all again been asking me when I was going to settle up at Mozumah. Old Rhitzo adding that he hoped I would make haste and come soon so that he might live to see the day and help to welcome me. |
