8th January. Moved camp today into Kidimah over a capital road the whole way and what would have been a very pleasant march indeed had it not been for several light showers of rain and a cutting wind which made it bitterly cold. |

This evening I received a report from Head Constable Phoisaloo (who is now at Kigwemah with Major Austin's camp, Major Austin himself being away at Japoo) telling me that the clans of Kigwemah had been quarreling among themselves and had turned out with shields and spears yesterday, and that a fight was imminent, so I have ordered him to go and tell the Chiefs that although I have no wish to interfere in their internal feuds, they must keep the peace as long as Major Austin is encamped in their neighbourhood, and that I shall be extremely offended with them if they do not at once put a stop to their fighting for the present. |
