[29] I am sorry to say we were very much delayed this morning in making a start owing to Colonel Thomson's coolies having received private orders from the Major forbidding them to accompany him any further to the East, orders which were afterwards changed to the effect that they were only to accompany as far as Kezakkenomah and "not a step further". The Major himself has marched to Tengiphemah (or Makhel) under the pretence of making arrangements for russud. |

In the afternoon I received a letter from James at Samaguting reporting the murder of the Kuki Scout near Keruphemah. From the deposition of the Khassi who accompanied the unfortunate man, it seems clear that the murder was committed for the sake of obtaining possession of the musket with which he was armed and has no political significance whatever. I am sorry to say James does not seem to have obtained any clue likely to lead him to discover who the perpetrators were. |
