21st January. Halted and accompanied Austin up to the top of Tellizo where we were occupied all day in taking observations to the several peaks visible from that station. |

On returning to camp this evening, I found that one Nirhoo, a Naga of Nizamah, had brought in a report that a Manipuri force of some 200 Sepoys and 400 Kukies had just marched into Sehmah and were threatening to attack Gaziphemah, a village which he states is situated close to a stream called the Lanier, said to flow North into Assam. On questioning Nirhoo further regarding the source of his information, he told me that the news of the Manipuri force having entered Sehmah etc. had been only just brought in to his village (Nizamah) by a woman (of Gaziphemah now living at Nizamah) who had been to Razamah to trade and had just returned from thence, and as Nirhoo adds that he is quite willing to allow me to punish him in any way I like should his information prove incorrect and I don't see that he has anything to gain by telling me a lie, I am inclined to believe the story in only too true and if so, it is very evident that the Manipuries are now trying to turn our flank again and the Rajah's excuse regarding this inability to render me any assistance is simply untrue. |
