22nd January. Moved camp to Sikhami having marched over a capital road the whole way. We are obliged to come back to Sikhami in order to enable Austin to complete his survey work, otherwise I should have preferred to have pushed on at once towards Gaziphemah. Another reason was that we had promised Roma Sing to rejoin him at Sikhami. |

I heard this morning from some of the Kuki coolies accompanying that whilst encamped below Sopoomah the other day, they had been told by some of the Major's Kukies that the Rajah had just despatched a force towards the North-East to smash up some Naga village in that direction, but that they had not mentioned it to me thinking that I knew all about it, so this corroborates the Naga report I heard yesterday and I have now determined to push on and have this matter cleared up before going on into Manipur, and indeed now under the circumstances, I am doubtful whether I shall go on into Manipur at all. However, there is lots of time to think about that hereafter. Colonel Thomson has despatched a couple of sepoys to the Major with a message to the effect that he wishes the latter, who has halted at Makhel, to come on and rejoin him at once in order that we may all proceed on together and enquire into the truth of the report that has reached us. |

I am glad to say Austin has been getting on famously with the map of the boundary from the sources of the Zupoo across to Tellizo and hopes to complete it in another day or two. |
