27th January. Moved camp to a spot below the Kopamedza Mountain and close to the village of Gallomi. En route we passed through the villages of Chesomi, Tephuzami and Mizami at each of which the villagers came out to see us in crowds and insisted upon making us "liquor up", coolies and all. At Cheromi ? observed a number of the houses had shingle roofs which I was informed is by no means an uncommon substitute for thatch on this range. In the evening I heard from a Naga of Gallomi that the Manipuries had turned back after burning three villages to the ground. He states that the reasons of their retreating is because they have heard of our advance and are afraid of our cutting them off. So our action has done some good at all events. |
