26th January. We were compelled to halt today at Kehezakenomah owing to my being confined to bed nearly the whole day with fever. Early in the morning Thomson sent off a letter to the Rajah telling him of the conduct of his escort in having refused to accompany him on any further and asking him whether it is true that they had done so under his orders, and if not, requesting him to order the escort to rejoin us at once. In the evening the messenger, one of my constables who had taken the letter, returned and informed us that he had made it over to the Jamadar in command of Colonel Thomson's escort who was still halted at Sikhami. He also brought back a note from the Jemadar which stated that he had now received the Major's orders to stand fast where he was until we returned. From a conversation I had with some of the chiefs of Kezakenomah today I learnt that the Manipuries first visited their village some 5 or 6 years ago, since when they had repeatedly demanded contributions which had been duly paid to them. I also heard a report today that the Manipuries had actually destroyed Gaziphemah a few days ago. |
