4th February. Halted at Zemai in order to enable Austin to carry on his survey work. This morning in course of conversation with one of the Zemai chiefs he corroborated the story that no Manipuries had ever entered Shipvomah up-to-date but that last year when a Manipuri Force visited Semi they had threatened to attack Shipvomah unless it paid them tribute and that the Shipvomah men had then sent them several head of cattle and many cloths. |

In the afternoon I walked out to Aphomai a village close by. Here I met Laro a most intelligent Naga of another village in the neighbourhood who spoke Manipuri fluently. From this man I learnt that the Manipuri Force which had lately destroyed Gaziphemah had been commanded by Toyabi Major and a Subadar named Sokasaba and that it had consisted of about 500 men altogether. On returning to camp I found several men of Raimi had come in to see me. They were most anxious that I should come on and see their village and said that there were many other villages to the east who were all anxious to welcome me as they had heard that I did not behave in the way the Manipuries did. |
