8th February. Halted in order to enable Major Austin to prepare a map showing exactly what work has been done up to date. Received another visit from Major Romasing who again urged me to go on into Manipur. |

9th February. As the map has not yet been completed we were compelled to halt here again today. Colonel Thomson however has gone on to Maitaiphum in order to arrange matters for our reception, etc., leaving Major Roma Sing behind to escort us in. |

In the morning I received a visit from one of the Chiefs of Megevemah who came in to present me with a spear and pig and to ask me whether I could not take his village under my protection as he had no wish to be under the Rajah, however I very clearly explained to him that I had nothing whatever to say to any villages lying south of the watershed as he did and that if he or any of his people were ill-treated they should appeal to the Political Agent of Manipur who I felt sure would see that they got justice done to them but they didn't seem to see it and it appears that they can never get a chance of speaking to the Manipur Saheb he is so surrounded by Manipuries and I cannot help thinking that it would be a good thing if the Government were to allow Colonel Thomson a certain number of Dobashas or Interpreters in his own pay for at present as far as I can see he is quite helpless to do good and from his position must be entirely in the hands of the Rajah and his unscrupulous "Majors". |
