22nd February. This morning I received a deputation from my Kuki scouts and coolies who headed by their chief Pakhu of Sailini, came to ask me to try and relieve them now as they had already served me for very near two months. So I have sent off a message to the great Hoting Mang Thado telling him to send me over 60 men as soon as he can. These Kukis are capital fellows. When I told them this morning that I did not think I could part with their services just yet, they replied at once: "Oh we don't intend to desert you but if you can relieve us we should like to go." |

Today I have been thinking well over the whole question of carrying on the boundary work, and taking into consideration that the cold weather is fast coming to a close, I am beginning to think it may perhaps be wisest after all to confine our further operations to the Kopamedza range for the rest of the season, leaving the great watershed to be finished up the next year. But then again, this would be playing into the Rajah's hands, for all he wants is delay at any price - and I should therefore like first to have the survey of the whole country near the head waters of the Lanier completed this season if possible. |
