29th March. A long but gentle descent then across the head of the Lanier and up a long sloping ridge brought us today to the village of Shiroi. |

On our first entering the village almost every soul bolted out, all the young men carrying off their spears and shields and it was not until quite late in the evening after they had been repeatedly sent out to that they came in. I must explain that en route Thomson's Subadar had mentioned to him that it was very doubtful how the Shiroi villagers would receive us as the Manipuries had not visited them for many years and in the evening when Thongal Major arrived he begged me I would warn my men against going about singing as he could not answer for their safety from the Shiroi Nagas who were great "butzats". The fact is we are now on the very outside limit of Manipuri rule and although it is just possible that ages ago Manipuries may have penetrated further north there is not the slightest doubt their authority is not recognized as far north as we are now even. |

Finding we could not get a sufficient supply of good water near the village we moved camp down into a small village about a mile below the village on the banks of a small stream which flows into the Thobal. |
