The Nagas east of the Doyang river (The eastern affluent of the Dhunsiri (Long. 94o E., Lat. 26o N.)) are divided into great clans under hereditary chiefs, who appear to exercise great influence over their people. They lived in large villages, some of not less than 300 houses. The villages occupy commanding and secure positions on the peaks or ridges of hills, the spurs or approaches to which are fortified, and the steep places made as inaccessible as possible. |
