34. Much has been done during the year in opening roads. The improvement in the main road from Golaghat to Kohima under Mr. Rollo and the Sappers has been very great. The road from Kohima to Wokha, 58 miles in length, has been made passable for mules throughout, part of it being a new trace, part following the old "Political path", which has been widened from 3 to 6 or 8 feet. Of the road towards Mao, which is to link Kohima with Manipur, the portion as far as Viswema, 16 miles, has been made, and 8 miles remain to be constructed in the current year. The road from Wokha to Golaghat has been much improved, a cane suspension bridge made over the Doyong at a better crossing, and the forest opened and cleared. These operations have greatly facilitated the business of transport and supply. The military transport corps of mules and coolies works on the Imperial road from Golaghat and assisted the Civil Department by carrying up 750 maunds of stores for the Public Works Department, and 525 for the police. Later on, 300 mules were lent to Mr. McCabe for a month and brought in 2,000 maunds of rice from the Wokha direction, thus making it possible to supply the Kohima bazar with food for the wives and families of the sepoys without having recourse to the Commissariat. |
