38. Three schools have been opened in the district, one at Kohima under an American Missionary, Mr. King, of which a good account is given; one at Khonoma, formerly under a sepoy of the 42nd, now under one of the 44th Regiment, where several Naga boys have learnt to read and sum, and one at Borpathar, opened by a Public Works employee who had leisure time on his hands, and devoted it to teaching the policemen's and bunniahs' children: the village itself is inhabited by Aitonias, whose boys are taught the Buddhist doctrines in the Shan tongue by a Bapu, or monk, and of these only a few attended the new school. Mr. McCabe desires to start schools at Wokha, Lozema and elsewhere, and his proposals will be favourably received. There is evidently an appreciation of learning as a handmaid to commerce - "I want my boy made sharp", said a Naga to the Deputy-Commissioner, "in order that he may hold his own with the 'bepari' (trader)." |
