38. The march made by the Deputy-Commissioner of the Naga Hills was undertaken with the object of punishing the Sema village of Nungtang for the murder of a British subject and also of collecting information on the question whether it would be advisable to extend the political control of the Deputy Commissioner of Kohima over the Ao or Hatiguria country. |

The party left Kohima on the 11th January, reaching Wokha on the 13th. A halt for one day was made to enable the full complement of 100 men to be made up, and rice and other requisites to be collected. |

On the 15th January, the party left Wokha and marching via Koio and Seleku, encamped on the left bank of the Doyang, a distance of 15-16 miles. |
