40. The Deputy-Commissioner of the Naga Hills made a tour also in December 1884 and January 1885 through the Eastern Angami villages north of the Lanier, in the vicinity of the Manipur frontier. There had been complaints that the Manipuris were trying to exact tribute from the independent Naga villages north of the Lanier, which is near the northern boundary of Manipur territory. In one case Mr McCabe restored Rs.300 which had been exacted by an armed party of Manipuris. It is now well understood that Manipuri interference in this region, except to punish outrages on Manipuri territory, cannot be permitted. The villages showed themselves willing to accept the Deputy-Commissioner of Kohima as the arbitrator of their disputes, and some of them professed their desire to be recognised as British subjects, and their readiness to pay house-tax in return for the protection thus afforded. |
