42. The general character of the year was remarkably healthy, epidemics were unknown, and fever was less prevalent than usual. The seasons do not seem to have been specially unfavourable for agriculture, though the rainfall registered at Kohima was ll inches less than that of 1883-84, and 9.30 inches less than the average of the four preceding years. At Wokha, on the other hand, 100 inches were registered, against 92.3l last year. The terraced 'sali' cultivation of the Angamis yielded an unusually good crop, but the 'ahu' rice, which is the principal food staple of the other tribes, was rather deficient in outturn, owing to the want of water. |
