Two British subjects were killed during 1884-85 by Nagas living beyond the frontier of the Naga Hills district. A Lhota Naga of the British village of Koio, while travelling in the Hatiguria country, was killed by men of Nungtang in May 1884; and in the July following the Raja of Lakhuti, the leading Lhota village in the Naga Hills district, reported that his nephew, while in company with another Lhota, had been treacherously murdered by Hatigurias of Mungatung. In the latter case a punitive expedition was immediately undertaken; the village of Mungatung submitted, and, upon enquiry, it appeared that the two Lhotas had been the aggressors, and that the deceased had mortally wounded one of two Hatigurias who were marching with them, the wounded man, however, being able to kill his assailant before he fell. Mr McCabe sentenced the surviving Lhota to seven years' imprisonment, and fined the Raja of Lakhuti for his false statement concerning his nephew's death. |

The Nungtang murder was not punished till January 1885. The village was evacuated, but the murderers were not given up; Mr McCabe, therefore, burnt the village, which had been guilty of a series of offences of the same kind. |

The Sema and Angami villages adjacent to the north-east frontier of Manipur have in a great measure given up blood-feuds, and on many occasions submitted their inter-village disputes to the Deputy-Commissioner's arbitration. During the present year, the Headmen of the village of Razami brought in 30 loads of rice as a present, and begged that they might be included in the Naga Hills district. |
