murders and head-taking; fear that illegitimate offspring of near relatives would bring misfortune; punishment; civil suits |

Two murders were committed by Nagas. Three Lhotas of Chaki murdered a young girl of the Sema village of Chelejuma for the sake of her head; two of them were apprehended, tried and executed, being the first criminals who had ever suffered capital punishment in Kohima; the third was caught afterwards and died while in custody, it is believed from fright. The other case was one of the murder of the illegitimate offspring of two first cousins, under the superstitious belief that a misfortune would befall the whole village if the offspring of such near relations were permitted to live. The murderer, who was the father of the child, was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment. |
