text: These two villages had a feud of old standing. The gaonbura of Shasilimi came and complained to the Deputy-Commissioner of the murder 10 days previously of a man of his village by Kichilimi while he was working in the jhum with his wife and child who were both wounded, but escaped owing to the timely arrival of assistance. The gaonburas of Kichilimi admitted the murder, but retorted that it was committed to avenge the death of one of their men who had been killed two months before by Shasilimi. The gaonbura of Shasilimi acknowledged the truth of the charge, but pleaded in turn that the murder of the Kichilimi man was in retaliation for the death at the beginning of the cold weather of another of his fellow villagers slain by Kichilimi. Despairing of getting at the origin of the quarrel and finding there was little to choose between the two villages, the Deputy-Commissioner fined Kichilimi as the larger village Rs.100, 7 cattle and 30 daos, and Shasilimi 5 cattle and 20 daos. The fines, or their equivalent in cattle, were realized.
text: The results of the march narrated above are the protection, which it is hoped will be lasting, of the Eastern Angami villages from further aggression by the Mezamis, the establishment, for the first time of our influence among the Semas, most of whose villages had never been visited by a British officer since the survey, and the commencement of a policy which in the course of time will, the Chief Commissioner trusts, put a stop to intertribal murders and feuds among these savages, and prove as successful in winning them to peaceful pursuits as it has already been among the Angamis and Lhotas.
