38. The supply of rations for the Frontier Police during the year was carried on without difficulty. Ghi, dal, and salt were provided under contract by a local trader, who received no advances, and was paid only after receipt and inspection of the supplies provided. Rice, as usual, was obtained from the Lhota country, no difficulty being experienced in procuring the required amount. Since the last harvest, an improvement in the system heretofore in working, under which the rice supplied by Lhotas was stored at Themokodima, has been introduced. The amount annually required and which the Lhota villages are bound to supply at the fixed rate of Rs.2 per maund, is about 2,500 maunds. This rice is now fetched direct into Kohima and the men bringing it receive instead of the old rate of Rs.2, the full price, Rs.3-4 per maund at which the rice is issued to the sepoys. This system perhaps presses more hardly on the distant villages north of Wokha, across the Doyong, but on the other hand, it relieves villages in the neighbourhood of Themokodima from the heavy demand for coolies to convey the rice stored there into Kohima, and in practice the trans-Doyong villages have hitherto never been called on to contribute their quota of rice at all. |
