text: 39. The demand for impressed labour has been far less heavy than during the previous year. The number of coolies supplied to the different departments from the sadr sub-division in 1887-88 as compared with the number impressed in 1886-87 is given below:-

text: The decrease in the demands for impressed carriage from the Military Department is most satisfactory, especially in view of the fact that the movements of troops during the late cold weather were on a very extensive scale. The whole of the 42nd Regiment was moved to Manipur. A wing of the 44th replaced the 42nd and the whole of the 43rd Regiment marched through the district from Mao to Golaghat, and yet the number of coolies supplied was only 108.
text: With the completion of the permanent wire to Manipur, the requirements of the Telegraph Department of course ceased, while for the Commissariat Department throughout the year stores were conveyed from Nichuguard to Kohima and from Kohima to Mao by free coolie labour and by pack-ponies. The Commissariat stores thus carried amounted to 10,545 maunds from Nichuguard to Kohima and 3,060 maunds from Kohima to Manipur.
