(iii) The Eastern Angamis |

60. With the exception of the village of Purobami, the behaviour of the Eastern Angamis was excellent. In September a Garo chaukidar, his wife (a Nagini) and baby and also a Naga were murdered near the Sijju river about 15 miles from Kohima. The place was at once visited by the Deputy Commissioner who found that it was a clear case of wilful murder but owing to the loneliness of the spot, it was difficult to fix the guilt on any particular village. Enquiries were, however, instituted and it was eventually ascertained that the men of Purobami were responsible for the crime. The villagers were called upon to give up the actual murderers and on their failing to do so, the village was burnt. |
