3. The hill tribes continued to be administered by the President of th Darbar and his two Assistants. The conduct of the hill tribes was good except for the unrest created among the Kabui and Kacha Nagas of North-West Manipur by a girl named Gaidiliu, a companion of Jadonang who was convicted for offence of murder and sentenced to death. The trouble took the form of a kind of semi-religious semi-martial movement amongst the Kabui and Kacha Nagas. It was their belief that if they followed the new cult, a Naga "Raj" would be created which would rule over all the tribes in the hills and bring the Kukis under subjection. A reward of Rs. 200 or guns for the apprehension of Gaidiliu or for information concerning here whereabouts was offered by the Manipur State in the early part of 1932. This was subsequently augmented b Government after the close of the year, who offered a further reward of Rs. 500, and any village either in the State or in British India, which gave information leading to the capture, was promised 10 years full remission of house tax. Endeavour was made during the year to effect her arrest but without success. |
