In my approach to the analysis of Konyak society I largely followed the fieldwork methods developed by Bronislaw Malinowski, though my earlier training in Vienna gave me a greater interest in comparative studies than was at that time current among British social anthropologists. For my field of study I chose the large village of Wakching and I lived there with some interruptions from July 1936 until June 1937. Only after I had gained a reasonable understanding of the internal organization of this village did I visit neighboring settlements as well as more distant Konyak villages differing from Wakching in language, political structure, and some aspects of material culture. Wakching, however, remained the focus of my investigation of Konyak society, and only in Wakching did I have close relations with a large number of prominent villagers and a nodding acquaintance with every man, woman, and child. |
