A door at the back of the hall led into a gallery, and beyond, an open platform built on poles stretched out over the hill slope. This platform served as a useful vantage point from which to defend the village path, for warriors stationed there could shower spears and arrows on an approaching foe without themselves being exposed to the arms of the raiders.
