divisions of loyalties and allies within the village |

In the days of head-hunting it often happened that the loyalties of a village were divided at morung level, one ward being on friendly and the other on feuding terms with one or all the wards of a neighboring village. Thus, before Wakching came under British administration Punkhung, a tributary of the Oukheang, had a feud with the Balang and Bala morungs of Wakching. This did not mean that there was a great deal of organized fighting, but no Punkhung man would have dared to enter Wakching unless well protected by his Oukheang friends. |
