The analysis of any aspect of Konyak social organization inevitably involves frequent references to the role of the morungs, and it is obvious that a knowledge of their internal structure and their relations with each other is essential for an understanding of the working of Konyak society. We have seen that in the village of Wakching there were five morungs. Their names were Oukheang-ban, Thepong-ban, Balang-ban, Bala-ban, and Ang-ban. The word 'ban' is the Wakching term for morung, but though the villagers invariably spoke of the Ang-ban, which literally means "chief's morung," they usually omitted the syllable 'ban' when talking of the other morungs, and I have here adopted this abbreviated form. |
