Until marriage a youth was a member of two distinct social units, his parental household and his age group. In the household of his parents he found his food and general maintenance, and it was to this unit that he owed most of his labor. In the men's house and in his age group he strove for social recognition and popularity among the village youth. Although he spent the greater part of his time working with his age group, this effort was not lost to his family. As a member of a gang of ten, he would work for nine days on the fields of others, but on the tenth day the whole gang would work on the fields of his father, possibly achieving more on that one day than a single boy helping his parents could have achieved in ten days. |
